Dirty Salmon Pop Ups
I wanted a hook bait that I could trust completely — one that works brilliantly as a single hook bait, but also something I could confidently fish over bait at any time of year.
“Salmon” has always been my go-to colour for a single hook bait, especially in spring. It’s a natural, fleshy tone that won’t put carp on edge, yet still stands out like a beacon over almost any lakebed. The subtle inconsistencies in colour aren’t accidental — each bait has been deliberately “dirtied” with natural attractants that not only boost pulling power but also give the bait a more natural, washed-out appearance. That’s what gives me total confidence fishing it both as a single and over bait, all year round.
The attractant package is a blend of specialised esters, aldehydes, ketones, oleoresins, and essential oils that I’ve refined over five years back when I was rolling my own bait — a combination that’s accounted for some of my best fish.
The base comes from Rob Packer at MGR Baits — a mix I trust completely after using it with great success over the past two years. It’s incredibly buoyant and packed with amino-acid-rich milk proteins, making it ideal for long-lasting, high-attract hook baits.
Originally, I asked Rob to make a small batch just for my own fishing… and he ended up producing 70-odd tubs 😄
So I thought I’d make them available here for you too.
I’m not claiming to be a bait expert — just an angler who knows exactly what I want from a hook bait. And this ticks every box for me.
